एक बार एक बूढ़ी औरत तीर्थयात्रा पर जा रही थी। पर उसे समझ में नहीं आ रहा था की वह अपने जीवन भर की कमाई कहाँ छोड़ के जाए तब उसने सोचा की साधु बाबा के आश्रम में छोड़ देती हूँ। वह साधु बाबा के आश्रम में अपना पैसा गाड़ के तीर्थयात्रा पर चली जाती है पर वापस आकर जब वह अपना पैसे लेने आश्रम जाती है तो पैसा उसे वहाँ नहीं मिलता और वह परेशान हो जाती है। वह बीरबल के पास जाके मदद मांगती है | तब बीरबल उसकी मदद करते है और उसे अपना पैसा वापस मिल जाता है।

अकबर बीरबल की ये कहानी है एक पहेली को सुलझाने की, जहाँ पहेली के रूप में एक नकली शेर पिंजरे में कैद होता है। पहेली ये थी की शेर और पिंजरे को हाथ लगाए बिना शेर को कैसे बाहर निकाला जा सकता है। पहेली के साथ भेजे गए संदेश में यह भी साफ लिखा था कि पिंजरे से शेर को बाहर निकालने के लिए एक व्यक्ति को एक ही बार मौका मिलेगा। जब दरबार में मौजूद कोई भी इस पहेली को सुलझा नहीं पाता है तब बीरबल अपनी बुद्धिमानी से पहेली को सुलझा देते है।

अकबर को अपना तोता बहुत ही प्रिय था क्योंकि वह न सिर्फ बोल लेता था बल्कि पूछे हुए किसी भी सवाल का जवाब बहुत अच्छे से देता था। इसलिए बादशाह ने अपने महल में उसके रहने के लिए शाही व्यवस्था करने का आदेश दिया। उन्होंने अपने सेवकों को कहा, इस तोते का खास ख्याल रखा जाए। तोते को किसी भी प्रकार की तकलीफ नहीं होनी और यह तोता किसी भी हालत में मरना तो बिल्कुल भी नहीं चाहिए। अगर किसी ने तोते के मरने की खबर उनको दी, तो वह उसको फांसी दे देंगे। पर एक दिन तोता मर जाता है, सभी सेवक घबरा जाते है और मदद के लिए बीरबल के पास जाते है।

ये कहानी है एक विद्वान् की जो बादशाह अकबर के दरबार में आता है और सभी को अलग अलग भाषाओँ में कविता सुनाता है और एक चुनौती भी देता है की अगर कोई उसकी मातृभाषा का पता लगा लेगा तो वह उसको अपना गुरु बना लेगा। बीरबल जो अपनी बुद्धिमता के लिए जाने जाते है, अपनी चतुराई से विद्वान् की मातृभाषा का पता लगा लेते है और विद्वान् को उन्हें अपना गुरु स्वीकार करना पड़ता है।
